A new rock wall is being proposed for Machans Beach
In Late 2010 Cairns Airport released its Draft Land Use Plan which included the possibility of a future second runway.NEW WEBSITEwww.mangroveprotect.com.auBarron Delta Mangrove Protection Campaign
Machans Beach is a community of about 941 inhabitants ( according to 2011 statistics ), located within the Barron River delta. Unlike many modern suburbs built at racing pace within few years, and aimed to be inhabited by exclusive and higher income families, Machans Beach has thrived and maintained a character of its own through the integration of a diverse population. Machans Beach has fortunately escaped the unrelenting development of North Queensland, for the tourism industry which constitutes an important source of economic growth for this part of Australia. Fortunate because it continues to be a residential area without hotels and devoid of the massive flow of people as seen in the northern beaches. Through the action of its residents and the Progress Association, it has been possible to fight proposals from developers to transform Machans Beach into a money generating playground. It is obvious to the newcomer that Machans Beach is a working class neighborhood, which has shaped the laid back and easy life style of this place. Although to talk of a history of Machans Beach is somewhat pretentious, it is interesting to acknowledge its origins, in the context of its aboriginal past and the subsequent colonization by europeans and chinese and the economic development that followed throughout the years in the Tropical North.
